Come Wander Along with Me...

I wander...it is simply what I do.  Since I was a young girl, my parent's tried everything to keep me close to home, going to such  measures as to buy me goats.  Though I loved my goats, my heart still  wandered.

Growing up in rural New Jersey, I was surrounded by dense woods and long stretches of farm land to fuel my imagination.   I felt at home in the arms of the forest and spent many days laying upon the fragrant mossy soil staring up through the filter of leaves... watching the light dance.  It is these experiences that I work to remember.

In adulthood, I discovered the joy of capturing those precious moments, through my camera's lens.  Though the many years in between my youth and the present, I have enjoyed many wonderful adventures and am currently wandering in another people's land.  For the past 10 years I have had the pleasure of living in Europe and learning to look at life in a very different way.

Through my images and my wanderings, I hope you will enjoy seeing the world around you... in a new way.

So...I invite you to "Come Wander Along with Me..."

A Lesson in Persistence

blue-green-dragonfly2sigsm

This morning while on a walk with my two best fellas, we stopped a while to admire the colorful dragonflies flitting about the stream.  I told my husband I have given up trying to catch a photo of these guys.  They just seem to know when I am coming and feel my desperation for the shot.   My husband said, “that doesn’t sound like you, if I were you,  I would just wade in and stand there a while….let them get use to you.”

This isn’t the first time his ability to coax me into a show has worked.  Normally I get from him, “LAURA, a REAL photographer wouldn’t even think about walking into a stinky forest pond…a REAL photographer would just DO IT”.

So, there I was seconds later with my brand new shoes….knee deep in the stream…waiting.  Happily it wasn’t but a few moments and a beautiful graceful blue green dragonfly landed in front of me.  I started shooting a bit tentatively at first afraid to scare the fella off.   He just stood there like some high paid model, opening and closing his lace like wings…he would fly a little around me as if as interested in me as I in him.   At one point I actually reached out and touched those delicate wings.

I got a few interesting images from this lesson in persistence, but mostly it was just so amazing to share a magical moment like that with Nature.

So…this soggy REAL photography…slightly on the pond smelly side…is going to go enjoy a nice cup of coffee…with a bit of pride for exercising patience.

July 5, 2009 - 06:50 Shannon MacGrogan-Ellis - Love this! I've been trying to snap our local ones (they look like biplanes!)- I've not been patient either. Perhaps I'll give it another go! We had small blue damsel flies landing on us all the way down the Edisto river. I think they were curious too. :)

July 5, 2009 - 08:54 Beverley Herrick - love the shot. It's now my new favorite over the sheep and friend in the snow. Your wizardry simply amazes me. BTW, love the shoes. Too bad they're now your stinky pond wading shoes now!

July 5, 2009 - 16:01 Catharine Amato - beautiful shots! well worth the wait in the pond! I've never seen ones this colour before.

July 6, 2009 - 05:43 Steve Baker - Nice to know you fially achieved the status of REAL photographer! What were you before....? I saw a large boulder in the woods on Saturday, with a smile-shaped crack on its "face". Thought of you. ;-)

July 6, 2009 - 14:25 Michael Van der Tol - You have finally reached the status of "Dragon Fly Whisperer"

July 9, 2009 - 20:52 piya - Magical! You've captured a lovely moment that otherwise would have simply gone unnoticed.
