Come Wander Along with Me...

I wander...it is simply what I do.  Since I was a young girl, my parent's tried everything to keep me close to home, going to such  measures as to buy me goats.  Though I loved my goats, my heart still  wandered.

Growing up in rural New Jersey, I was surrounded by dense woods and long stretches of farm land to fuel my imagination.   I felt at home in the arms of the forest and spent many days laying upon the fragrant mossy soil staring up through the filter of leaves... watching the light dance.  It is these experiences that I work to remember.

In adulthood, I discovered the joy of capturing those precious moments, through my camera's lens.  Though the many years in between my youth and the present, I have enjoyed many wonderful adventures and am currently wandering in another people's land.  For the past 10 years I have had the pleasure of living in Europe and learning to look at life in a very different way.

Through my images and my wanderings, I hope you will enjoy seeing the world around you... in a new way.

So...I invite you to "Come Wander Along with Me..."

Fairy Rings and the Holy Grail…

red-capped-shroom-6sigsmI spent some time today in a “Fairy Ring” in the forest.  While on our Sunday wander today we found what for me has always been the Holy Grail of mushrooms, the Red Fly mushroom.  This beautiful red capped mushroom fueled many of my childhood dreams of Germany and it’s Fairy filled forests.

Once many years ago I tripped over a log on a hike and fell face first on the ground in front of one of these beauties and I have held onto the memory of that discovery since that day.  So much so that each year during the Christmas season I try to buy a new Christmas ornament in the shape of this vibrantly colored fungus for my Christmas tree.  In many of the German folk stories and Fairy tales these red caps dot their illustrations.  Thought of as a good luck bringer in many European cultures.

Today, my husbands keen eye caught a ring of them just off the path we were traveling on.  I can not even express my joy in finding this Fairy Ring.  They were even more beautiful than in my imagination.

October 27, 2009 - 08:49 Phili Vaughn - Good find and nice photos of these small gems of the forest. The colors are fascinating. Nearly every time I walk through the woods, I find some kind of mushroom--occasionally a ring--but I can't recall ever seeing the Red Fly. Thanks for the pictures and story! Phil Vaughn
