Come Wander Along with Me...

I wander...it is simply what I do.  Since I was a young girl, my parent's tried everything to keep me close to home, going to such  measures as to buy me goats.  Though I loved my goats, my heart still  wandered.

Growing up in rural New Jersey, I was surrounded by dense woods and long stretches of farm land to fuel my imagination.   I felt at home in the arms of the forest and spent many days laying upon the fragrant mossy soil staring up through the filter of leaves... watching the light dance.  It is these experiences that I work to remember.

In adulthood, I discovered the joy of capturing those precious moments, through my camera's lens.  Though the many years in between my youth and the present, I have enjoyed many wonderful adventures and am currently wandering in another people's land.  For the past 10 years I have had the pleasure of living in Europe and learning to look at life in a very different way.

Through my images and my wanderings, I hope you will enjoy seeing the world around you... in a new way.

So...I invite you to "Come Wander Along with Me..."

20 + C + M + B + 10…I think I have had an Epiphany!

When I first moved to Germany I was fascinated by the symbols scribbled in chalk above most houses in the village.  Luckily on e day while I was home around January 6th a group of children rang my door bell.  To my surprise there were 4 children, 3 dressed like the Three Kings of the bible and one was holding a large star.  They sang some songs while one of the Kings clutching an incense burner, scented my whole hallway with the ancient scent of frankincense and Myrrh.

When they finished the tallest child reached up and in chalk market these letters and numbers above my door…20 + C + M + B + 10.  Each letter represented the names of the Kings, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar and the numbers, the year.  I have also heard it also means “Christus mansionem benedicat” (Christ bless this house).

It is these touching small town old world moments that move me and each year I look forward to seeing which village children will get the great honor to be this years Kings.

January 11, 2010 - 07:17 Betsy - I've always wondered what those chalk markings meant! Thanks!

January 12, 2010 - 15:12 Phil Vaughn - This is the first time that I have heard about this custom, but I like it very much. Laura, when I think back on all your stories and photos, you have added so much to my "education" about Europe!
